What is Ear Wax and Why Does It Build Up?
Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural substance produced by the ear to protect and lubricate the ear canal. In most cases, it clears on its own. However, some people experience a build-up that can lead to symptoms such as:
-
Muffled or reduced hearing
-
A feeling of fullness in the ear
-
Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
-
Dizziness or imbalance
-
Discomfort or itching
Factors like narrow ear canals, hearing aid use, earbuds, or over-cleaning with cotton buds can contribute to wax impaction.
What is Microsuction?
Microsuction is a precise, dry technique for removing ear wax using a gentle suction device and a microscope or specialised magnification system. Unlike traditional ear syringing, it does not involve water, making it a safer and more comfortable option, especially for people with sensitive ears or a history of ear problems.
Why Choose Microsuction?
-
Safe and controlled – Performed under direct vision by trained professionals
-
Water-free – Ideal for those with ear infections, perforated eardrums, or previous ear surgery
-
Quick and effective – Most appointments take around 15–20 minutes
-
Immediate results – Many patients notice improved hearing straight away
Is There Anything I Should Do Before My Appointment?
In some cases, we recommend using olive oil ear drops for a few days beforehand to soften the wax. This can make the removal process quicker and more comfortable. If you’re unsure, feel free to contact us for advice prior to your visit.
